TRAGIC DISCOVERY MADE IN SEARCH FOR MISSING SNORKELLER

A body has been found after a snorkeller went missing off Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

A 60-year-old Reservoir man planned to go snorkelling at Sorrento Ocean Beach on Saturday morning.

He was seen near the water but did not return, triggering a major search.

A beachgoer found a body at the beach on Wednesday morning, with police confident it is that of the missing man.

A report will be prepared for the coroner but the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The latest incident comes after another snorkeller died at Altona Beach on Port Phillip Bay in January.

The man, who had been swimming at the popular beach, was reported missing in the afternoon.

Rescuers launched a search for the man and his body was found later that evening.

Three years earlier, a woman died at the same beach while she was also snorkelling.

The 20-year-old failed to resurface from the water which forced her brothers to raise the alarm with rescuers.

Emergency crews including water police spent three days searching for the woman before they managed to recover her body.

Altona Beach is the most popular beach in Melbourne's western suburbs, known for its calm, clear waters.

Locals and tourists visit to swim, fish, snorkel and kite surf.
